Visual Area Networking - Enabling Universal Access to Advanced Visualization

SGI is ushering in a new era of advanced, collaborative visualization. Much in the same way that the World Wide Web enabled creators and consumers of static data sets to be at different locations than each other or their main database systems, Visual Area Networking allows creators and consumers of dynamic, interactive visual information to be at different locations than their complex data management and advanced visualization systems.

Visual Area Networking:

  • Provides universal access to advanced visualization capabilities: Now, individual users and geographically dispersed teams can collaborate using any mix of client devices. By remotely interacting with a visualization supercomputer, a geologist in Houston, a geophysicist in Saudi Arabia, and a drilling engineer on a platform in the North Sea can work together to maximize the likelihood of striking oil.
  • Streamlines IT environments and increases ROI: Visual Area Networking makes it possible to eliminate infrequently used workstations from desktop environments and share a centralized resource when those capabilities are required. This reduces hardware depreciation, software licensing, and system administration costs while increasing the capabilities offered to all end users instead of just a selected few.
  • Makes it possible for creators and consumers of visual information to be working at different locations than the corporate data repositories and visualization systems deployed: In a single day, a doctor in New York can analyze 3D scans from patients in rural Georgia and help plan an operation in Singapore.
  • Allows end users to go beyond the limitations of their desktop or mobile computing environment and interactively exploit the power of SGI® Onyx® family visualization supercomputers: Automobile designers can come up with more innovative safety features and their entire organizations can be more productive because everyone can interact with, understand, and solve their most complex problems faster than ever before.
  • Enables high-performance desktop-to-desktop collaboration: A desktop workstation can act as both a client and a server in a Visual Area Network, so remote experts can be consulted immediately when problems arise without having to worry about copying data or installing software on a remote system.
