    Visual Area Networking is SGI's vision and strategy for providing universal access to advanced visualization capabilities. Visual Area Networks leverage existing network infrastructure to enable anyone within an organization--whether they use SGI, SUNTM, Linux®, Windows NT®, Windows® 2000 or Windows® XP desktops or even mobile computing devices--to transparently access powerful applications that take advantage of the graphics, compute, and I/O power of an SGI Onyx 3000 series with InfinitePerformance graphics.

    OpenGL Vizserver is the first software product that supports the Visual Area Networking strategy. It enables high-performance rendering applications that take full advantage of the InfinitePerformance graphics pipeline to run unaltered on Onyx family systems with the results delivered directly to and controlled by the end user. I/O-intensive applications scream with up to 100 times faster performance than a local workstation, CPU-intensive applications can run 10 or 20 times faster, and unique high-quality rendering is now available to all users. As a result, users can better understand and solve complex problems and work together as a team because they have access to applications and functionality that were previously unavailable on the standard desktop environment.
