Reality Center desk display
SGI® Reality CenterTM desk displays are desk-size units that fit into an existing conference room, office, or lab. They are typically used by engineers, designers, or students for tasks that require the use of 3D graphics to simulate objects or environments. A Reality Center desk display is driven by an SGI® Onyx® 3000 series system with InfiniteReality® family graphics, an SGI Onyx 3000 series system with InfinitePerformanceTM graphics, an SGI® Onyx® 300 system with InfiniteReality family graphics, a Silicon Graphics® Onyx2® visual workstation, or a Silicon Graphics® Octane2TM visual workstation as its host system, and includes one or two projectors in the base and/or rear of the unit. When viewing 3D images on a Reality Center desk display, the user wears stereo goggles and tracker mechanisms so the host system can read the perspective from which the user is viewing the images.

Sample applications for Reality Center desk displays, which are typically used by one to five people at a time, are:

  • Collaboratively planning locations for facility or personnel placements
  • Engineering equipment assemblies
  • Learning how to work with mechanical assemblies
  • Viewing the relationships between molecules in a compound
  • Designing virtual reality applications to be used in larger Reality Center facilities

Reality Center desk displays are often chosen for their ease of use in smaller facilities, hands-on interface style, and high degree of immersion. They are also popular because of their relative low cost and the speed with which they can be moved and set up.
